I-Phone or Blackberry

As the wife informed me a new washer and dryer is not a suitable gift for her birthday, I am resigned to moving her into the era of the smart phone.

As a Blackberry user for the past couple of years, I must say I have been very happy with it. I have tried to use the I-phone, but the overwhelming technological power of it gives me the creeps. Also, I discovered I cannot type on the damn thing. I tried the old line "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog", but never got past "The qu..." The keys were so sensitive, I kept picking up letters without trying. Then, somehow I e-mailed the test message to myself. Smart phone, my ass.

Not to mention, the Blackberry will not set me back $400-$500 to start. I must admit, that appeals to my "frugal" side.

Any opinions out there?

Wow. Now you and the wife can communicate constantly.

Sounds blissful! It's like a birthday present for you both...

Get her the i-phone. It's her birthday, and you love her -- forget about "frugal".

I used a Blackberry for 2 years in Houston and I am still having withdrawals in Caracas, however, the phantom vibrations have ceased. I bought an iPod Touch (iPhone less the phone) for my oldest daughter for Christmas. Having tinkered with both, for practicality, I would probably still choose the Blackberry because of the reasons that you mentioned (typing, touchy screen applications, etc). Having the Blackberry with the "Pearl" was the ultimate because it allowed you to quickly scroll and worked like a mouse.

However, since your wife is not an engineer and might just want a cool toy, I would vote with Tammy and get the iPhone. I expect the new generation of iPhones to close the gap on some of the practical short-comings and having a combination phone, web browser and iPod is fun. The wi-fi connectivity is awesome and I am constantly amazed where my daughter is able to pick up a signal. Have you wi-fi in your abode? (probably not compatible with your TRS-80)

Uhhhhhhhhh. If I had to choose between the two I owuld get the Iphone. Why not. It is the fone of the phuture. I read an intercom rumour that the iPhone will be the "communicator" in the new Star Trek movie which comes out next May.

Truth be told I prefer a phone that does just that-makes phone calls and maybe sends/receives text messages. I don't want to carry the intercom in my pockets of my Old Navy cargo shorts.

Shoeless...I will have you know my home is wi-fi. Apparently my neighbor has a pretty good router, so I have just piggy-backed onto their service. You were right, however, the TRS-80 couldn't handle it, so I upgraded to a 486 with 4 meg of memory. I am currently shopping for a Pentium processor on E-Bay.

I will continue to push for the Blackberry...she has enough toys.

Al, that is SO BITCHIN' COOL!

Fish, you need to add that to your blog layout... seriously. It's truly bad ass.

I think it does settle it.

Quickly Robin, to the Batcave.

If he added that image, he would have to change the name of the blog to something that sounded less like the contents of a cereal container.

Maybe "underneath the cape" or "inside the cave"...or maybe going with the iPod theme, "inside the iBox" or just "iPlod"...

I've known you twenty years and I've yet to see another side ...

Well Al, I've know him three years... he also shows his "ass side" quite often.

I'm not very good at serious comments but ... after two weeks with an iPhone my major complaints are difficulty in typing (may improve with time) and weak cell reception ...

Al,

But you can listen to you MP3 collection of The Gratest Hits of Wall St.

Well, I'm replying via my iPhone... so you can guess my opinion. I think men have a harder time with typing on the iPhone... bigger fingers I suppose would be the culprit. But, the good news is, the learning curve for me has been rather brief. I am amazed at how quickly I have learned to type with speed and precision on this thing. I have enjoyed mine. I am not the best with technology, but this little gadget is pretty damn cool. It is very instinctive, and I've learned fairly easily. Get her the iPhone. It' a worth it. You can get internet anywhere because ATT provides it's own service. It's a little slower that regular wireless, but I'ts real convenient. Well, we have just been seated at our table... time to order. God Iove this thing!

Pity it doesn't proof read too... I meant "than" not "that." Oh well, maybe they'll add that in the next upgrade.

I watched Seasons 1,2,3 of The Office, in their entirety on my iPhone. . . at work.

Happy Birthday, Khiva. :-)

So, what was it? i-phone or Blackberry?

k said...

Yes, Billyfish, we are all dying of suspense... what was it? Post of picture...

Of course, it was iPhone. I would not have expected less. She did, at least, concede it was the "toy factor" that pushed her over to it.

I ordered it through ATT on the intercom, and it should be here tomorrow. I wished her a happy birthday, and told her to enjoy her iPhone...I wanted nothing to do with it. She accused me of being a Luddite, and I could not argue.

Great, now she will be able to remind you to feed the dogs from just about anywhere...

SCORE! Nicely played, Shoeless.

Only if Billyfish gets an iPhone too, and I suspect that was at least part of why he won't
